Links

Cool stuff from around the Net. Back when we were a proper Internet, we used to provide our readers with a list of links to other pages we think they might enjoy or benefit from, or that we might look cool in association with. The Internet became worse when we fell out of the habit.

https://govwayback.com/ — GovWayback, a tool to access the Wayback Machine’s archive of federal department websites pre-Jan. 20, 2025.

https://web.archive.org/ — The Wayback Machine/Internet Archive, my favorite website. Archives old websites from the good Internet, as well as apparently all human work and knowledge.

Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism — This documentary from 20+ years ago is only more relevant today.

https://theonion.com/ — The Onion. Classic Internet comedy page. Available again in paper format.

https://www.propublica.org/ — Nonprofit independent journalism. ‘Nuff said.

http://www.alternet.org — Alternet is one of the oldest “alt” media outlets online. It tells the news from a perspective and with a bite like mine. Creatures of the early web know to call Alternet daddy.

https://www.pbs.org/show/newshour/ — The PBS NewsHour. Must-watch prime-time TV. In my house, we call it “The Hour.”

https://www.splcenter.org/ — The Southern Poverty Law Center. This is a fantastic resource for identifying hate groups and their symbology.

https://www.c-span.org/ — When people ask me where I get my news when I don’t own a TV, I tell them: I prefer primary sources. On C-Span, you can watch Congressional hearings, campaign events, presidential press conferences, et cetera. You can watch them raw, without the prophylactic of someone else summarizing them for you.

https://www.opensecrets.org/ — Another fantastic resource. You can snoop to see who your neighbor donated to, who your coworkers are donating to, and what sorts of industries and weird billionaires are donating to whomever.

https://www.bellingcat.com/ — Bellingcat is a great Open Source Intelligence resource. The investigations into political extremist groups are very eye-opening.

https://www.huffpost.com/ — The Huffing-and-Puffington Post isn’t what it was, but the hard-bitten, unapologetically anti-Republican attitude Arianna brought to the Internet back in the day is, I think, the missing ingredient to our soup.

https://www.landoverbaptist.org/ — The Landover Baptist Church. I was surprised to see this website is still up and running. It is a hilarious lampoon of the late 90s fire-and-brimstone style religious websites, in general, and the Westboro Baptist Church, in particular.

https://www.thebulwark.com/ — The Bulwark on Substack. A funny bunch of repentant Republicans raising the alarms about the threat Donald Trump poses to our democracy.

https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/ — El Rushbo, really? I know, I know, but if you want to journey to the center of the Republican mind, there is no better reading. I also tip my hat to a truly open and excellent web ethos. Modern sites obscure their content under garbage, but the Doctor of Democracy’s slice of the Net has audio, video, and transcripts, and the search feature works quite nicely.

https://www.erowid.org — As many people in Donald Trump’s administration are former or current drug abusers, this website serves as an excellent resource to see first-hand experiences of how chemicals, like the ketamine Elon Musk uses to “hole out,” affect their respective users, especially on habituation.

https://fogcam.org/ — The San Fransisco fog cam, the longest continually operating webcam in the world.
